22. PeekoType for Android
This section applies to the PeekoType mobile app for Android. It supplements these Terms and takes precedence over them wherever the two differ.
22.1 Licence, distribution and price
The Android app is distributed two ways: through Google Play, and as a download from this website. Both are the same app. Your use of Google Play is governed by Google's own terms, and if you install from Google Play your updates come from there; if you install the download from this website you update it by downloading it again.
Dictating with the Tiny and Base speech models, on your own phone and offline, is free. It needs no payment, no account and no connection, there is no limit on how much you use it, and it always will be free.
Everything else is unlocked by a single payment of £4.99: the Small model, transcribing a recording, custom vocabulary, read aloud, the floating microphone, live typing and AI cleanup. It is a one-off purchase and not a subscription.
How you pay depends on where you installed the app. From Google Play, the purchase is made through Google Play Billing and belongs to your Google account, so it is restored automatically on a new phone. From this website, the purchase is made through Stripe and you receive an unlock key by email; keep that email, because pasting the key in is how you restore the unlock on a reinstall or on another phone you own.
Sections 4 and 7 (the desktop free trial, and desktop software updates) do not apply to the Android app. For refunds, a purchase made through Google Play is subject to Google's refund policy; a purchase made through this website is covered by the same 14-day money-back guarantee described in section 6.
PeekoType for Windows and PeekoType for Android are separate products, bought separately. Buying either one does not include the other, and a licence key for one does not work in the other.
22.2 Downloaded models and voices
The speech models and the read-aloud voice are not ours. They are downloaded from their publishers and used under their own licences, which are not affected by these terms.
- Speech recognition uses OpenAI's Whisper models, released under the MIT licence.
- Reading aloud uses the Piper voice "Alba" (en_GB-alba-medium), by the Piper project, released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence and trained on the University of Edinburgh CSTR corpus. It is used unmodified.
- Speech is produced on your device by sherpa-onnx, from the k2-fsa project, under the Apache 2.0 licence.
22.3 Recordings you transcribe
You are responsible for the recordings you put into the app, and you must have the right to transcribe them. Recording or transcribing a conversation involving other people may require their knowledge or their consent, and the rules differ between countries and between private and workplace settings. PeekoType does not check this and cannot advise on it.
22.4 Optional online services and your own API key
The mobile app's online features — the AI microphone, live typing, AI cleanup, and transcribing a recording online — require an OpenAI API key that you create and pay for yourself. They do not work without one, and the app does not supply one.
We make no money from this. You contract directly with OpenAI, OpenAI bills you at their prices, and PeekoType receives no commission, revenue share, referral fee or payment of any kind arising from your use of that key. We are not a party to that agreement, we never see your key, and no audio or text you send to them passes through any server of ours.
You are responsible for that account, for keeping your key secure, and for every charge incurred against it — including charges arising from use of the app. OpenAI's terms govern your use of their service. We do not control it and cannot guarantee its availability, accuracy or pricing, and we are not liable for what it costs you.
The app may instead be pointed at any other compatible service by choosing "Other" and supplying its address, model name and key. Everything in this section then applies to that provider in place of OpenAI.
The offline features need no key, no account and no connection. What they need is the one-off purchase described in section 22.1 — except dictation with the Tiny and Base models, which is free.
22.5 Accuracy
Speech recognition makes mistakes. Accents, background noise, unusual names and technical terms all affect it. Always read back anything that matters before you send or rely on it. PeekoType is not suitable as the sole means of producing medical, legal, financial or safety-critical records.
Reading aloud has the same limits in reverse. A synthetic voice will mispronounce names, abbreviations and foreign words, and it reads what is in the box rather than what the page looks like, so headings, tables and captions may not be read in the order they appear. It is a convenience, not a substitute for reading anything that matters.
22.6 Requirements
Section 17 describes the desktop requirements and does not apply to the mobile app. The Android app requires Android 8.0 or later on a 64-bit (arm64) device. Offline speech models, and the optional read-aloud voice, are downloaded separately after installation and need free storage space on the device.
